THEATRE REVIEW: ‘Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle’ (New Wimbledon Theatre)

THEATRE REVIEW: ‘Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle’ (New Wimbledon Theatre)

 Introduction

Another Mischief Theatre Company production, and having seen and enjoyed ‘Magic Goes Wrong’ in 2020, I was keen to see this spin-off production, a version of which was originally seen at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe.

Plot

Join the ‘Mind Mangler’ as he returns to the stage following a disappointing two-night run at the Luton Holiday Inn conference centre, suite 2b. His new two-man show solo spectacular is predicted to spiral into chaos as he attempts to read your mind...

Review

Written by the multi award-winning team behind the sold-out global smash hit ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ and the BBC comedy series ‘The Goes Wrong Show’, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, and starring Lewis and Sayer, based on characters originally created in ‘Magic Goes Wrong’ by the same authors with Penn Jillette & Teller, this show sets out to parody mind reading shows.

Two hours of hilarity ensued with Lewis on stage from start to finish, but really coming alive when interacting with his inept stooge played by Sayer. There was less crashing scenery than ‘MGW’, but the emotional heart of the characters seen in the previous production was again present, as the two bicker and fall out, before finally resolving everything in an amazing guillotine finale, which I am still laughing at just thinking about it. There was also enough magic that goes right to keep interest levels up. There was some repeat material from ‘MGW’, but no more than around 20% of the whole.

The tour continues until the end of March 2023, when Lewis and Sayer, join the rest of Mischief for a Broadway run of ‘Peter Pan Goes Wrong’. Catch this idiocy whilst you can.
